Tank packaging with misleading pictures?
OK...it's more of a vent than a question, but what's up with these little tanks out there with pictures of fish in them that just shouldn't be in a tank that size. They're all like that...even the bigger tanks. It leads people (like me before I did research) to believe that they can actually put these fish in there! Like this one... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3635550&findingMethod=rr 4 big goldfish in a 6 gallon tank...not even close...6 gallons for a betta...happy healthy fish...4 goldfish...not living long...:(
This one... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10291810 2 goldfish in 1.5 gallon? wtf?
All this does is lead people to believe that those goldfish are happy in that...that's like 2 people in a bathroom stall!
There's others that will show you proper fish, but like 2 or 3 times the amount of them that can fit in the tank...anything to make more money I guess. Heaven forbid they think about the poor animals that have to live in that environment. Fish don't just hover...they MOVE...side to side and up and down even!
PLEASE research before you by a tank and the size your fish will become as adults! Your tank can last forever so it's worth the price you'll pay for the bigger tank. A happy, healthy tank is so much better to look at than fish being lethargic and laying around cause they're sick or have nowhere to move.
...ok...I think I'm done now! :)
Wal-Mart isn't the only culprit. I've seen these tanks at the bigger pet stores too. I would hope they would know better...

Because they're stupid. Have you ever seen a hamburger look like the ones in the ads?

You are right
90% of the questions on here seem to have been written by kids who have bought stuff at walmart/petsmart etc and now it is all going wrong
New tank syndrome, no filters, tiny tanks etc etc
WTF is Walmart doing selling red tailed cats, bala sharks, black ghost knife fish, common plecs and shovel nose cats to kids? Still I guess they will sell guns to people so what do you expect
This will only stop when these shysters are stopped from selling live animals and it is made illegal to sell tanks and fish to people on the same day
This isn't an impulse buy
If you bought a dog and kept it in a wooden box 2' square, never cleaned it out , heated in to 40C and fed it marshmallows only, you would be sent to prison. Similar abuse of fish seems to be OK as long as it makes money
Probably unfair to blame walmart alone..... I have never found a multiple retailer who knew much about what they were selling or cared overly about what the end result was going to be.

Very little in advertising is exactly as it appears. I'm glad you went on to educate yourself. A friend and I had an argument the other day about this. She says its the fault of the stores for not educating the public..I said the public needs to educate themselves before buying ,living creatures. Yes, you should be able to rely somewhat on on those who are selling it to help you...but they are selling it. I wouldn't go out and buy a car without checking it out and getting information beforehand. Why is buying fish any different? Impulse buying has been the death of many pets. When i started out in fish, there was no Internet. Now a days, no one who has a computer in their home has an excuse for not educating themselves beforehand. How easy is it to find out something on the web? Extremely!
And it's not the stores fault, actually. Its the manufacturers. I wish there was some way to make our dissatisfaction known to them.

That's been one of my big gripes for a long time. It's the manufacturers of the tanks, not walmart or petsmart. The thinking is, you buy the 1 gallon tank, stuff your goldfish in it, then realize you need to upgrade to a larger tank, so you spend more money buying a larger tank. Bottom line, it's all about the money, like anything else. Need to target the manufacturers with nasty letters......
