Why are SOME vegans so preachy? --from a vegan?
I am so frustrated with my transition into the vegan lifestyle. I was previously a vegetarian though I think that requires a lot less education and advice than becoming vegan.
I've looked for advice from people on here, on various online forums and through community groups. Some have been very resourceful while others, the militant and very crabby others have been anything but.
I am not at all a proselytizing vegan. This was not at all an ethical decision. I just think animal products are bad for the body, but I'm not going to push that on others. I don't push my religious beliefs after all and the same goes for this.
The preachy attitude is counterproductive. My decision to go vegan was made in part because of my friend's mom who is a lot older and the picture of health. She is the healthiest person I know. She never once pushed me or her kids into becoming vegan. She's a living ad for the vegan lifestyle. There's no need to preach when you've got that.

I agree. I have a friend who is a vegan for very sound reasons, but she doesn't act like it's the ONLY way. I think people would eat healthier by seeing a positive example, like your friend's mom. :) Preaching about how meat is evil isn't gonna win people over.

Some people are just that way and you're right, it's counterproductive. I am neither vegetarian or vegan but I fully respect peoples choice to become vegan or vegetarian. I have vegetarian family members and they never try to force their beliefs on me and if we eat together, I respect their choice by not eating meat around them.

People are preachy about everything. Mac users preach about how much PC's stink, and visa versa. I have seen really rude people on here attack vegans, and some vegans who are very rude to people who don't live their lifestyle. Some people need to feel morally superior to others, and certainly making a commitment to not use or eat products that harm animals is a commendable thing. It's the same with religion, politics, anything really. It's people thinking that they and ONLY they know what's best for the whole world.
I try to take a more zen approach to things, and will really only speak up if someone is a racist or discriminates against men, women or children.

A few things I have seen on here are people who are provoked by trolls and this leads people into a preachy mode. Honestly I think it is best to ignore them but some people put themselves on the defense. Other things I have seen on here are people pretending to be vegans or vegetarians to present a negative view of them. These people use profanity and intentionally use over-the-top phrases like "insulting the vegan vibe" or "Earthly duty." Some even claim they were vegan or vegetarian for years and developed some helth problem and they "discovered" that they need meat. Most of these look valid at first glance but when you review their history or notice things that make it obvious that they have mulitiple accounts you start to realize they are just meat-eaters pulling you chain. I don't like to push my views on anyone but if they ask about a vegetarian or vegan diet I will tell them what I know. If it relates to religon, ethics, science, or health I tell them what I know and what I think and try not to offend anyone. It's less credible when you go around insulting people and using vulgar language. Those are the ones I report because there are kids that look in this forum and I don't think they should be exposed to that type of behavior. It makes them think it is acceptable.

I think it's the few that are preachy that actually give vegans a bad reputation.
Most of the vegans I know are pretty cool and have their reasons for becoming a vegan.
There are a couple who look for the "greater meaning" in their life and feel it's their calling to preach. Yet, they don't volunteer at the mission, collect food for the homeless... etc, but think putting stickers "meat is dead" on supermaket meat is their contribution. Kind of ironic I think.
