Why do unhealthy foods tend to be more flavorful than healthy foods?
By unhealthy, I mean foods high in butters, saturated fats, oils, and processed sugars, while by healthy, I mean raw and properly cooked vegetables (green and leafy or otherwise), foods boiled, broiled, grilled, or stripped of their natural trans fat content (as found in certain animal meats). I understand that the chemical response received from the tongue by the brain may favor fattier foods, but I would like to know why this response is favored from the beginning if its main tendency is to lead human as a species down the path of self destruction.

We were never meant to eat those fatty, salty and sugary foods in such bulk as we do. The sugars, salts and fats are found naturally in foods to draw us to eating them. What you are speaking of are foods produced by us where those sugars, salts and fats are concentrated into those processed foods. So those sugars, salts and fats are artificially introduced into those foods by us. We are taking what nature used in foods in small amounts to entice people into eating those foods and exploiting it to get people to eat other foods. Those other foods tend to be unhealthy because of the excess amounts of these sugars, salts and fats used to get people to eat them. Anything in excess is unhealthy.
If we ate foods in their raw state as we did for the most part as cavemen, then there would be no way for us to load up to an unhealthy extent on salty, fatty and sugary foods the way we do now. We simply could not consume such an abundance of salt, fat and sugar that way. It is because we refine salt, fats and sugar and put them into foods in a more concentrated form that we overindulge in these ingredients, which then is unhealthy.

if you believe the whole caveman theory, which I think can be separated from evolution, the explanation is this.
Back when we were hunters and gatherers of nuts and berries, we were drawn to very high calorie foods, that's just for survivals sake. If you have a limited supply of food you want foods with high energy value, and not a side salad.
Unfortunately it seems we still crave those kinds of foods, but with 24 hour donut shops we are tempted to over indulge.

I thought I was the only one with this question!!! For the most part humans have very effective self defense mechanisms ie pain so we know when we are harming ourselves but with foods it does seem to be different.
Though all I can say is that if you were starving having foods like McDonald's would actually be quite beneficial because of all the fats and such. The problem with those nutrients are that we have to much off them and for some reason begin to crave the garbage.
