No - they are often a cop out for people who cannot form proper relationships with other humans. They are a big responsibility and can end up limiting your life, without your realising it. God knows what you can catch from having (some) animals sharing your life - if you are allergic to cats for example, it is hardly going to make you happy or healthy. Pets might be regarded as an expensive luxury.
Yes - there are studies to show that having responsibility for an animal is good for the constitution - less likely to be hypertensive and so on. (Some people might relieve their stress by kicking the cat, but that would be going too far). So - arguments on both sides.

I'd say pets or no pets, it's up to the individual to be happy. Very little of the external World influences whether an individual is happy or not (it is more how that individual perceives the external World)
However, as an owner of a very awesome cat, I can say that they can indeed CONTRIBUTE to or ENHANCE a happy life. However, they are not necessary for a happy life, nor will they guarantee a happy life if present. It's all context.
